Exhortation topic:                           Strategy of combat

By:                                                   Benjamin F Boyrard

Maybe none of us have an M.D (that’s the short for Doctor of Medicine) or don’t hold a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), but do you know that we are all better than doctors?

You see, doctors try very hard to heal the body, but we have the elements needed to heal the soul. Let us not forget what the most important part of a human being is the soul: (Matthew 16:26) “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

So if we can get a man to a point where his soul can be saved then we have accomplished something greater than any physician could.

Mark 1:17 says: “And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.”  So we have a spiritual duty, which is to bring men to the Kingdom of God so that Jesus will give them life, life eternal.

We are also call to be witnesses for the Lord. Let us take a look at a few verses:

Isa 43:10

Ye [are] my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I [am] he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

Isa 43:12

I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when [there was] no strange [god] among you: therefore ye [are] my witnesses, saith the LORD, that I [am] God.

Act 1:8

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

What does a witness do?

According to the Webster’s new English dictionary:  a witness is a person who gives evidence or attests a signing; testimony or of a fact… also meaning a person who have first-hand knowledge of something, to see, or to be on the scene, or experience an event. Although not being the piece of evidence itself, the witness is a “representative” of such.

This means that we can be witnesses for Christ only if we have experienced of have first-hand personal knowledge of Him & not base on what others tell us about him.

I haven’t study law, but it only takes common sense to know that one’s testimony is only credible if they have personally witness the event.

Once we have that personal encounter with the greatest man who ever live (& still is alive today) and witness his amazing power, only then we can testify effectively (or with effect under the anointing & power of the Holy Ghost).

As a witness is called to stand in the court of law to give his or her testimony in front of the judge, attorneys or lawyers and the audience, we are also called to testify to the world of the goodness of God.

Of course each of us might not be able to own a TV or Radio station that broadcast our testimony worldwide but we can testify to a friend, family member or work colleague or even a neighbour in our surrounding area.

Who can remember the theme for this year’s anniversary ?

I Chronicles 4:10Jabez cried out to the God of  Israel, saying, “Oh, that thou would bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou would keep me from evil, that it may not greive me!” And God granted him that which he requested.

So if we want to enlarge our coast or our territory, the spreading the Holy word of God and the effectiveness of our testimonies are very important. In fact this is critical knowing that we are living in crucial times. By the way let us not forget that (we overcome the enemy by the blood of the lamb & our testimony)

Rev 12:11

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

This brings us to the overcoming part.

To fight against the enemy we must know “him” and learn “his tactics”.

This is part of what we call “Strategy of Combat”.

We must also know the weapons we are available to us & understand to plan of the Commander & Chief. (thank God his name isn’t Mr. Nicolas Sarcozy, or Mr. Georges Bush, but the king of Glory. Who is this king of Glory? He is the Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in Battle (written in Psalms 24:8)

Ok, back to our topic… we all faced discouragement, obstacles or troubles at one point in our lives (those of you who never went through any of those things then God surely Bless you !)

However, in time as we developed a close and personal relationship with Jesus and bear witness of His power then we will be able to handle situations with much more wisdom and fly over obstacles the same way an eagle would fly over the mountain tops.

But to do this we must be confident in the ONE we know who can help us and that He is greater than anything in this Universe.

In fact Hebrews chapter 1 verse 10 makes a very clear statement: “And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands.” And we can back this up by John chapter 1 verse 1 to 3 “In the beginning …”  and since He lives in us (“how?” you might ask): by keeping & living by his word (let us look at 1 John 3:24).

1Jo 3:24

And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

Then that means that we have the same power that created the Universe residing within us.

Imagine this for a moment: We are more powerful then all the nuclear missiles in world combined… we are like walking bombs and normally all evil spirits (because they were also created beings) should be trembling with fear when we are around.

But for us to get this power we must first accept Him (or JESUS) as Lord: John 1:12 “But as many as receive Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.”

Remember that during His life on Earth, Jesus did so many miracles (heal the sick, make the blind to see, make the lame to walk, cast out demons, he also turned water into wine, he fed a multitude (or many thousands of people) with a one-person-meal, walked on the sea, stop a storm instantly… just to name a few, but I guess you’ll agree with me that the greatest of them all is bring the dead back to life.

Yet Jesus said (in John 14:12):

Jhn 14:12

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater [works] than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

(Let us read that verse again !)

So this basically means in other words that we have a power residing within us that is beyond imagination and that defies all reason or logic: a power that science can only notice but cannot explain.

Unfortunately, to most of us it is still residing under the form of a potential (the possible that is not yet actual or the unrealized ability to do something)

I can remember when going to school, at each parent-teacher meeting: the teachers would tell my Mother “Peux mieux faire” (French) or in order words “He can do better”.

Like students, we have that great potential but we are not fully making use of it.

This is our first and most important force we have on our side when we engage in battle.

1Jo 4:4

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

In all let us not forget that even as we are soldiers in the army of the Lord, this battle is not quite ours. It is the Lord’s Battle.

2Ch 20:14

Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation;

2Ch 20:15

And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle [is] not yours, but God's.

2Ch 20:16

To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.

2Ch 20:17

Ye shall not [need] to fight in this [battle]: set yourselves, stand ye [still], and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD [will be] with you.

We are on the front lines carrying out the military operation but it is the Lord who is responsible for the outcome of this spiritual war. The cutest thing about this, is that: what WILL BE the outcome of this spiritual battle WAS ALREADY established many thousands of years ago when God said: I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Getting a bruise on the heel isn’t too bad but a bruise to the head could be fatal or deadly.

Our elder brother Jesus, stepped on the enemy’s head back in the days when He was crucified, buried and rose again. (I John 3:8) But to demonstrate His unequal & unlimited power, this event will replay itself in a near future but not a finger will be lay on our Saviour & King, and it will happen in a much greater and epic proportions. We will not read it but you can look it up at home (Rev 16 verses 12 to 21 and Rev 19 verses 11 to the end of chapter 20) However, let us take a glimpse at the 2nd and final outcome of this great spiritual battle: Rev 20:10 and 14 and 15.

If “death” that we humans so much fear and “hell” itself will be destroy by God then I think every man, woman, boy or girl with very little reason would want to be on the wining side. But this can only be achieve if we spread the good news of redemption: to show them that God loves them and that they are not necessarily bound for eternal destruction, but that they can be save through the Blood of Jesus Christ who gave His life in exchange for ours.

We are also like military recruiters: officers who go around trying to sign-in new persons (young and old) into the Holy Army of God. But the nicest thing here, is that, we can recruit in various ways but under ONE principle or ONE truth. Some of us are called to recruit by preaching, others by teaching, some by singing, others by playing music, and by writing (as I do), and some will recruit hundreds or thousands of souls at once by evangelising…

Each man recruiting and forming others to become soldiers as well, but in his effective way (according to the gift God has given to each Man).

How will I know my effective way in wining souls to the Kingdom?

The answer is easy: you must seek God personally and He will reveal it to you. Remember what we said earlier about a witness: you must have the experience, and even more: you must get very close to Him (as in a relationship between best friends) so that He can reveal His “secrets” to you.

It is all part of the PLAN. Yes, no one goes to war without a plan.

You see, it fits together so perfectly: as we get closer to Him, and because He is omniscient (all knowing) thus He knows & sees the enemy’s move & position a far in advance, He will tell us what to do and what direction to take and even what weapon to use at a precise giving time. God gives us revelation through His word, dreams and also through visions.

So now that we know:  who is our Commander & Chief, the Great Power He has placed within us and that He has already won the battle… let us now look that various weapons we can use:

Lets turn to Ephesians 6 verses 13 to 20

So we have:

-The belt of truth: this item is important in the sense where has a double function: it braces the soldier, his waist or the kidney and lower abdomen sections are protected. Then it also carries the soldier weapon (gun, sword, knives, grenades, etc…)

-The breastplate of righteousness: this device is crucial for the survival of the soldier. Why? (you might ask): what happens to the guy who gets an arrow or a bullet through his chest, especially in the left side of his chest ? So if we want to live long as soldiers, we must live righteously (no more, no less).

-The shoes of the gospel of peace: in life we need shoes for every occasion (let all the sisters in the house say amen): to go to church we need a particular type of shoes; to go to work we need another type; to go jogging or to the gym we need another, to go by the neighbour we also need another type of shoes… well when we become spiritual soldiers we also need a specific type of shoes.

As small they might seem to be, the shoes protects the feet from the raw battle soil which can have all kind of small sharp debris. They also offer strong grip if the soldier is required to run or climb. They must also protect the feet from heat, water and cold.

These are the shoes we have to put on to go and spread the gospel.

-The shield of faith: this offers a double protection added to the breastplate. Take note that the breastplate is fixed but the soldier can move around the shield in any direction as he sees fit to reflect the darts of the enemy. So if we notice that the enemy is attacking us in one direction then we can focus our faith and prayers (one don’t go without the other) in that same direction: could it be health, finance, work, family ..etc

-The helmet of Salvation: like we said previously, any blow or bruise to the head can result in severe injuries or even death. So as the heart in the chest is protected by the breastplate, the head must be protected by the helmet. God has offered Salvation by giving His only begotten son, but we must in turn accept it by our own free-will. And “will” takes place in the mind, and the mind is surely not in our toes but in our head.

-The Sword of the Spirit: It is good to be protected. Most of all the items name before are weaponry of defensive strategy ‘or serve to protect or shield).

Now the Sword, the Praying (supplication in the Spirit, the fasting, and various types of prayers), and the speaking of the gospel are the weaponry of offensive strategy (or serve to attack).

In other words we have weapons to use to protect ourselves and others are use to attack with. Let us take a quick look at the fierceness of this weapon. Turn to Hebrews 4: 12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

[write this on the board: the sword or word of God can discern the thoughts (of the mind) and intents of the heart.]

Now, back in the medieval ages (when kings ruled and knights were sent to war), some soldiers would lose a piece of their armour during the heat of battle and would still make it back home alive if his troop had win.

But can we lose a piece of the complete armour and still survive?

Yes, but only by the mercies of God.

If we lose one piece, the entire armour cease from existing and we will be vulnerable or expose: The entire structure is linked:

  • Who is the father of truth?
  • Who is the author of righteousness?
  • Who is the focus point in the gospel (or who is the gospel talking about)?
  • How can we please God?

see Hebrews 11:6

Hbr 11:6

But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

And John 1:1  “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God”  and verse 4: “In him was life, and the life was the light of men.”

And noticed that Paul mentioned the word “ambassador”. So we come back again to a similar word as “witness”: “ambassador” or a representative.

So we are more than just recruiters, we are ambassadors of the Kingdom of the Most High.

But do you know what an ambassador is?

An ambassador is the highest ranking diplomatic representative from one country to another. He is an authorized messenger who has a diplomatic immunity, which means no one in the country he stays-in cannot touch or come near him unless the ruler of his country gives permission to do so.

Isn’t that exciting? We are in a battle where when we go in the enemy’s camp, no one can touch us unless our Superior grants them permission to.

No wonder the song writer wrote “we are destined to win”.

But before going on the front lines, we must be intensively trained: by fasting & studying the Word of God. In such case we will thickened our armour and increase our skills in using the sword.

Have you ever seen those films like “Zoro” or “Star Wars” and noticed how good those guys are at the sword? It is because of many months or years of practice.

Yet we still haven’t examine the most powerful weapon we have: it is the name that is above all names. The name by which everything is that is. The name by which the devil trembles and demons flee. The name by which darkness must give way to the Light, the name by which Life is given: the name of Jesus Christ.

Let us look at John 14: 13 to 14: Jesus saying to his disciples: “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it”. So the name of Jesus is honoured not only on earth but also in heaven for it has the power to release things.

Let us read Acts 3 verse 1 to 7. Then Acts 16 verse 16 to 18.

We also have the anointing of the Holy Ghost which also empowers us in preparation for battle.

Now that we Who is leading, what his plan is & what weapons we have … let us now study a little bit about our adversary. It is always vital to understand your enemy before engaging in war with him… today we call this “military reconnaissance”.

Do you know that our history was marked by 2 World Wars: the 1st in 1914 to 1918 and the 2nd in 1939 to 1945. Countless millions of men, women & children lost their lives during these periods. Scientists state that the end of the present world system will occur when the 3rd World War brakes out.

But did you also know that similar in the spiritual realm: we have 3 Great Wars:

  • The 1st started in heaven just after a certain angel by the name of Lucifer tried to exalt himself above God.

Revelation chapter 12 verse 7 and 9: “And there was a war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels (…) And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”

  • The 2nd Great War: is now and started with the fall of Man back in the Garden of Eden. It has gotten worst since the early Christians started to spread the gospel.

Phl 2:12

Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

  • And of course the 3rd Great War which will begin at the rendez-vous point called Armageddon.

But unlike the earthly world wars, which were instigated by different men; the Great Spiritual Wars are all instigated by one person & one person only: the same one who started it.

Isa 14:12

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

Lucifer (meaning the Light-Bearer) was an anointed cherub (or the highest order of angels, who ministered close around the Throne of God).

II Corinthians chapter 11 verse 14 “And no marveled; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”

Isaiah chapter 14 verse 13 “For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.”

He was beautifully built, so beautiful and greatly designed that he let his beauty get to his head = that’s call pride.

Let us take a look at Ezekiel chapter 28 verses 13 and 14: “Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.”

He was so wonderfully built that his voice was music in itself, so high in order (or rank) and in power that he was allowed to be on the holy mountain of God. So he experienced the presence of God like no other angel in heaven and no man on earth. By the way Lucifer was not programmed by God to be evil: Ezekiel chapter 28 verse 15: “Thou was perfect in thy ways from the day that thou was created, till iniquity was found in thee.” Sin, I remind you, is inclining to evil under the influence of an external element; but iniquity is to develop evil from within. That’s why it’s called in-iquity.

But because of pride, he had decided to convince some of the angels to assist him and making the most stupid and unrealizable “coup d’état” in Heaven, way back at the dawn of time.

His main goal is now to keep us out from interring the Kingdom of God where we will be able to enjoy God’s presence forever.

Nevertheless his power or rank, Satan remains a limited being.

How?

Simple, he is a created being. So he has far less power than the Creator.

And since the Creator Himself has set a boundary that He Himself honors then obviously, Satan, the created being has also to respect that boundary: and that is “Free-will”.

So because he cannot force anyone to do anything, he can then only use the same old strategy as he did back with the angel: try to convince us to incline to evil.

But how does he convince others (spiritual beings like himself and humans) to do evil?

Another simple answer: by influencing the mind.

You most likely will agree with me when I say that no one needs to hold a PhD or Doctorate Degree to know that our minds are very vulnerable (or defenseless) and therefore easily influenced by what we see, hear, feel, etc…

This is the strategy of the enemy: to mix error with truth and make it look pleasant, capture the mind and control it, then finally to continue satisfying the desires of the flesh.

Let us take a close look at Genesis chapter 3 verses 1 to 6: “Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

And the woman said unto the serpent, we may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, ye shall not surely die. For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Can you find the lie introduced in those verses? Let me help you a bit, Genesis chapter 2 verses 16 and 17 say: “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shall surely die.

Were you thinking about verse 4 of chapter 3? Well guess again (There was a time when I would have answered the same thing)

Actually, the “lie” takes form in the very first verse. The serpent was the cleverest beast in those days. This walking reptile was covered with scales that reflected light the same way gold or silver does. Such a physical appearance alone would capture anyone’s eyes and virtually hypnotize him or her. For this reason the “Evil One” had chosen to use the serpent as his first element of disguise.

The serpent begin seedling the lie by creating an atmosphere of doubt: “Had God said?” And as usual, he perfectly blended things in by adding one word, which turned the truth into a lie. Can you find that word? Pretty slick, isn’t he? Well if you have guessed the word “every” then Bravo! Adam had been forbidden to eat from one particular tree, and one alone.

But the serpent asked “if God had said that they shouldn’t eat of every tree of the garden?”

The lie is so cunningly introduced that it begins to affect the mind.           By the way ladies, allow me to slip in these lines: some women say (I have personally heard with my own hears), and psychologists affirm that the woman’s mind is a bit weaker (or easier to be influenced) than that of a man. Yet, the man can be easily enticed by a woman. So I guess that the enemy is not so dumb after all, he has his strategy: when he lured the woman into the trap he knew it would be just a matter of time before the man fell into it himself.

Let us dig a little deeper… The woman’s mind is beginning to feel the effect of what she sees (the serpent’s dazzling beauty) and what she feels (a setting of doubts). The result of this, is that Eve change the words God had commanded: “Ye shall not eat it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.” God had not mentioned anything about touching. Now that the mind is troubled, blurred by doubts and confused, he (the enemy) hammers-in by introducing the lie in a more direct or mature form: “Ye shall not surely die”.

But as mentioned earlier, he always uses a bit of truth to make his lies look good: “For God knows that in the day ye eat of it, your eyes will be opened” which no one can deny. That statement is one hundred percent pure truth.

Now that he controls Eve’s mind and has presented a lie hidden behind a truth, he moves to a higher level.

“And ye shall be as gods knowing good and evil” Wow! Being as a god, doesn’t that sound fantastic? Hard to resist such proposal!

Now look at the way everything just falls inline: (see verse 6) “she saw that the tree was good for food and it was pleasant to the eyes” here the senses (see, touch, smell, taste …) take over and lead to a source of unlawful desire: “and the tree to be desired to make one wise” and thus she becomes one hundred percent under the enemy’s control. Now to officially gives-in and becomes the enemy’s slave: she took and ate of the fruit and so did Adam.

At this very moment Adam and his companion Eve lost something big: their power and control over this world as it is mentioned in Genesis Chapter 1 verses 27 and 28 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

By the way, that is why we (men) often times get a bit frustrated, especially in these stressful modern days, when things get out of control. We still have hidden deep down within us that need to master things.

We often refer to this entire procedure or strategy as “temptation”. So let us look to see what the dictionary say about this word. Temptation: the state of being tempted. To tempt: entice to do wrong, to invite, attract or induce into something bad.

Do you know how this is done? Simply by manipulating the senses, then the mind by creating doubt with lies hidden behind truth. If the person inclines you have gained control over him or her.

In fact through the centuries, he (the enemy) has not changed is strategy at all. Without any shame or fear he dared to even tempt the Son of God while he walked on this earth. Let us look at Matthew chapter 3 verses 3 to 10:

(conclusion):

Thus, it is only reasonable for us to say that the weapons we need to fight evil cannot be created or generated by man.

But we can have access to a power the king of darkness himself cannot withstand. Do you wish to have this power tonight?

All you have to do is to confess that you have sinned against God and accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

Remember:

Rom 14:11

For it is written, [As] I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
